Case Details
Instruction Date : 2023
Incident Location : Koufonisia Island, Greece
Salvage / Antipollution Contractors : MEGATUGS / SMIT Salvage
Salvage / Wreck Removal Works Duration : ≈ 4 months
Recycling Duration : ≈ 4 months
General Notes / MMC Involvement The yacht caught fire whilst at anchor near the port of Koufonisia Island. Despite best efforts of the crew, which involved fire extinguishing actions using all available means onboard, the fire quickly spread. The crew evacuated the yacht. Salvage / fire fighting tugs were engaged and arrived in the area to combat the fire. The yacht capsized and sank shortly afterwards. Following the initial immediate response and salvage operation, necessary antipollution arrangements were agreed and maintained at the casualty site. An ITT was set up for the wreck removal. Following review of all prospective Contractor submissions a Contractor was appointed and the wreck removal operation which involved parbuckling was carried out. The casualty was then towed to Piraeus for recycling. MMC acted as P&I surveyors/correspondents representing the P&I Club of the yacht. Surveyors were immediately mobilised and attended on site for the emergency response. We provided assistance to the crew, cared for their needs and arranged their repatriation since their travel documents were lost in the fire. We ensured that appropriate salvage and antipollution actions were taken in order to protect the marine environment and minimize pollution impact. We actively organized the ITT process for the wreck removal, carried out technical reviews, drafted all the required documents aided by the P&I club and assisted in the selection of the Contractor. We monitored at all times the wreck removal operations and final towage for recycling. We were at all times engaging and liaising with the local Port Authorities and Coastguard.
